Second ‘Song Of Servant’(Isaiah49:1~7)
Second ‘Song Of Servant’(Isaiah49:1~7)
“Listen, O coastlands, to Me,
And take heed, you peoples from afar!
The Lord has called Me from the womb;
From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
2 And
He has made My mouth like a sharp sword;
In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.”
3 “And
He said to me, ‘You are My servant, O Israel,
In whom I will be glorified.’
4 Then
I said, ‘I have labored in vain, I have spent my
strength for nothing and in vain;
Yet surely my just reward is with the Lord, And my work with my God.’”
5 “And
now the Lord
says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him, So that Israel is gathered to Him[a]
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,
And My God shall be My strength),
6 Indeed
He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be
My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
7 Thus
says the Lord,
The Redeemer of Israel, their Holy one,
To Him whom man despises, To Him whom the nation abhors,
To the Servant of rulers: “Kings shall see and
arise,
Princes also shall worship, Because of the Lord who is faithful,
The Holy one of Israel; And He has chosen You.”
Intro)
1. Today’s verse Isaiah chapter 49 has God’s word about Jehovah’s servant verse 1-3.
“Listen, O coastlands, to Me, And take heed, you peoples from afar!
The Lord has called Me from the womb;
From the matrix of My mother He has made mention of My name.
2 And
He has made My mouth like a sharp sword;
In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.”
3 “And
He said to me, ‘You are My servant, O Israel,
In whom I will be glorified.’
(Here it is giving prophecy about Jehovah’s servant’s features of its birth. Let’s go over some of features and share God’s grace of sermon ‘song of second servant’
Body)
a) Has to be called in period of maternity
1. None just becomes Messiah. There has to be God’s word and his prophecy. Messiah will be called in period of maternity and work on act of Israel’s cure, salvation, and judgment.
2. ‘Coastlands’ verse 1 is talking about is about all islands in this world. And ‘people from far’ means all different countries out there, which means everyone in this world.
God’s word has vitality and exportability, so his word didn’t just stay in Israel and today two thousands later the word of God is still spreading. Today’s Chinese communist supporters are having trouble with Chinese Christian. The number grew in China now it has one hundred million Christian in China. So people in China say if you put our president’s picture on the wall instead of Jesus they will give them money for it. In Russia Putin even joins the church service. In North Korea there is increases of number of Christian as well of course they have to hide in the basement.
Even Islam started to accept Jesus in large number after Jasmine revolution saying ‘we do not need evil Islam that kills our own people.’
3. Jesus received call in period of maternity, so he was born as Holy spirit and received a call as servant. When Mary gave birth angel came and said like this. Luke1:26-33.
26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”[c]
29 But when she saw him,[d] she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Before Jesus was born God named him and made him as messiah.
B) 3kinds of Messiah’s features of ministry
1.
Verse 2 says, ‘2 And
He has made My mouth like a sharp sword;
In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me,
And made Me a polished shaft;
In His quiver He has hidden Me.” God gives prophecy about how he will
grow him and what power will he get and how to protect him.
. 2. First, God gives messiah a word like a sharp blade. Feature of Messiah is has power in his word. If we read about New Testament his teaching is amazing and great. None of prophet gave any greater word. When Jesus speaks illness is cured, deaf will hear, dead will come alive, ghost will run away, blind will see, and crippled will walk. This is because God gave him authority and power.
3. Second, God said he will hide and protect Messiah. Messiah will go through pain, hardships, and risk, but he will be in God’s protection. When he died on the cross God raise him again 4 days later. Power of resurrection is within Jesus.
When Jesus born in Bethlehem Herod the great sent an army to kill Jesus, but didn’t work.
Jesus and his family already left to Egypt guided by angel.
4. Third, it says Messiah is like sharp arrow.
Arrow is a weapon to kill. Jesus came to kill someone? Yes he was sent to kill group of Satan. Messiah is an arrow, and it is in quiver (gospel) when evil sees Jesus they got scared and ran off.
c) Jehovah’s servant meets risk.
Verse 4
4 Then
I said, ‘I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain;
Yet surely my just reward is with the Lord,
And my work with my God.’”
Jehovah’s servant worked for God, people, and even died on the cross, but none was around him. Died Jesus on the cross looked so lonely. It looked like even God abandoned him. Was it worth it? So, Jesus said, ‘"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
But later verse says that his labor wasn’t in vain and it will be rewarded.
.
Sometimes we ask to missionary ‘you could live your live so much easier and comfortable why would you choose this path?’ it may seem it has no value in it, but this path will be rewarded by God. This is shape of Jehovah’s servant, and hope.
Verse 5-6
5 “And
now the Lord
says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him,
So that Israel is gathered to Him[a]
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,
And My God shall be My strength),
6 Indeed
He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
In
middle of verse 5 Lord said ‘And now the Lord says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him,
So that Israel is gathered to Him’… in book of Act it says after Jesus resurrected
and peter give sermon 3-5 thousand men repent their sins and accepted Jesus.
Even today through Jesus God is gathering people who are cursed by this world’s sin.
Today, Israel is becoming more generous towards Christianity, opening the door of heart. Missionary Lim gmhee we support who works at Israel sometimes give message saying “pastor! Deacons! Come to Jerusalem! God is working on amazing thing. People of Israel is listening to gospel, they accept Jesus and miracle of Holy Spirit has arrived.” How wonderful is this?
D) Jehovah’s servant’s work will shine the light to nations.
6 Indeed
He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
Verse 6 says to servant of Jehovah gathering Israel as one is small and easy work, but to God’s big plan that is just part of it. God’s plan is that entire nation and people is earning salvation. This includes you and me.
Missionary who came to Korea long ago to spread gospel wasn’t welcomed, they didn’t have family or free food given. They either died in Korea, get sick, and bury their family. This is not in vain; it was holy sacrifice that they made to achieve God’s will.
Con)
Ephesians 1:4-5 says, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
Just thinking about this God’s grace is hard to handle. We are now Jesus’ servant and disciples. We have to work to achieve God’s will. God’s words have always come true and so on. God is there working. Let’s share glory and honor to him. Hallelujah!
