(Today we are going to talk about Jesus' 5 nicknames with book of Isaiah 9:6-7)

A) First nickname, wonderful

1. Prophet Isaiah was active before Jesus was born, which was 701-740 years ago.

Especially in book of Isaiah there are many important prophecies about Jesus' born. Today's text is like this, on verse 6 it says "⁶ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." This means when he born he will be the true leader for humanity.

 

2. Translation in Korean bible sometimes gives hard time in understanding. Jesus' nickname wonderful is translated as great teacher. To Jewish existence of rabbi (teacher) is very important. In Talmud there is a story shows importance about Rabbi and power in rabbi's words.

Roma used many ways to cut off Jews while they are ruling them such as closing their school, forbids worship and many feast days, burn books, and tried to stop them from training Rabbi.

When they train rabbi they have ceremony of appointment, but roman told them if anyone attend, they will be hang and burn their village or city. At that time period this was most effective and cruel ways they used against Jew, because without rabbi Jewish society would not run properly, therefore it could cause serious problem. Romans knew that Rabbi is leader of mental, doctor, and lawyer in Jew's society.

One of rabbi brought 5 of his student to mountain by risking death and destruction of their village.  When they arrived Rabbi appointed all 5 students as rabbi, but they got busted by Romans. Students asked rabbi "Rabbi, what happens now?" rabbi replied "I've lived enough, but you guys have to continue living and fulfill role of rabbi. Old rabbi got captured and killed, but rest of them successfully ran off.

This shows how important rabbi is in their society.

 

3. Jesus was one of the greatest teachers while he was standing on the ground like us. Many of students followed him, and 2000 years after he died there are many students and following his words. Therefore, he was the true great teacher like prophecy, and rabbi guides our lives.

 4. Then what is nick name "wonderful" mean ? it means 'amazing' isn't it amazing?  His existence and born, miracles, gospel he made, died on cross, and revived 4 days after. Everything about him seems to be amazing. Jesus will come back like this again and surprise the world, and make people fear that do not believe in Jesus and deny his existence.

We can learn how amazing Jesus is from record in bible. Matthew 13:54 “⁵⁴ And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?" Matthew 22:22  “²² When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way..”
 “²⁸ And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

²⁹ For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”( Matthew 7:28-29, reaction of people after Jesus finished Sermon on the Mount) Mark 1:27 “²⁷ And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.” etc...There are many more records like this. Jesus made all these amazing things come true as prophecy says.

B) Second nickname, Counselor

1. Second nickname of Jesus is Counselor. Many in Korea do not know true meaning of what counselor does, but unlike Korea there are many facilities that deal with many different problems with profession. Jesus also came to this land as great counselor.

2. Jesus sacrifices his life for us, counsels, cures our ill lives, body, mind, and relationship. Counsel does not give absolute solution, but Jesus is complete Counselor. Even now Jesus wants us to give our problems to him and receive counsel about it, and he promises that he will carry our problems and cure our problems. So, he told us to leave all the problems to him.

 

D) Third nickname, Mighty God.

1. Prophet Isaiah nicknamed baby Jesus as Mighty God. We believe Jesus is son of God. God is trinity that has Father, Son, and Holy Ghost in one. They do different things in order, but they are same in one God. Religiously hard to understand is gospel of trinity. Jesus having nickname of Might God means he is God himself. This means just normal great person deify into God, but he was God from the beginning.

2. In book of John 1:18 says

^'18 No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.'  Philippians  2: 6-11 Saint Paul says '⁶ Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

⁷ But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

⁸ And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

⁹ Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

¹⁰ That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

¹¹ And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Yes indeed, Jesus is mighty God, and son of God.

 

D) Forth nickname, Everlasting Father.

Jesus' forth nickname is Everlasting father. In bible God is presented as our father, meaning God is father of creation. Word 'father' means to Jewish 'creator' or 'resource.' Jesus was with God when things are created, so he is our father as well. Saint John says

 

 Saint John says father God is love in 1 John 4:16.

When accept Jesus as our savior, we will earn wealth that we can't earn. Jesus says in John 10:10 “...I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”This means when we accept God as our savior
we will earn privilege for being God's children.

 

 

E) Fifth nickname, king of peace

1. Lastly Jesus fifth nickname is king of peace.

Our worlds there are still lots of bloodshed through conflicts, and wars. Small and little disputes are countless. Even today there is group called DAESH or I.S Terrorist is flipping our world. The night Jesus born angels from sky sang, which is in Luke 2:14 '¹⁴ Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'

Jesus said like this in John 14:27 "²⁷ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

2. we have to accept Jesus, because he took our curse and pain of sins to cross with grace and at last true peace has arrived to us. This is a proof, and title for our hymn. Do you seek true peace? Believe in Jesus.
