Live as servant (John 13 :1~8)

 

Intro)

1. Today I’d like to share grace about life that serves.

There are 3 ways to live a life. First is to survive, second is to succeed, and third is to serve.

2. 20years ago there was a pastor named Young Ju-Lee, he went to Calcutta in India to meet ‘Mother Teresa’, she came out 10 minutes after he registered a meeting. At meeting Pastor Lee gave her pen made in Korea, she pulled out yellow card and wrote ‘The fruit of SILENCE is Prayer. The fruit of PRAYER is Faith. The fruit of FAITH is Love. The fruit of LOVE is Service. The fruit of SERVICE is Peace.’

 

 3.‘serving’is a great act. Many great people in the history knew serving and moved to action. Many served God as choir, deacon, and cook etc. Often serving God cannot be noticed, but God always notices. (2000years ago, Jesus came to our world to server mankind. Today’s verse is what Jesus said in his last supper. Let’s learn why and how he served, and what is lesson we can learn from it.

A) Jesus who was server.

1. In John 13:4 says ‘⁴ rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.’ Jesus took off his cloth first, and put towel around his waist. This is basic of servant’s action. Jewish called Jesus teacher. In bible Jesus was called as Rabbi. Rabbi is highly respected in Jewish’s society, therefore Rabbis do not wash their student’s or follower’s feet or servant work.

 

Disciples called Jesus Rabbi in verse 13. Jesus wanted them to learn they need to serve each other, so he became a role model and taught them the way.

2.In verse 5 says ‘⁵ After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.’

In Jewish culture, if someone visits someone’s house, the owner or the servant of the house brings water to clean their feet, because they do not wear shoes. This is their manner and culture to accept the guest in proper way. Through this feet wash and massage it will make guest to relax and feel welcomed.

Let’s think about the meaning of serving. Serving is solving one’s discomfort and tiredness.

Jesus cleaned his disciples’ feet and they felt his kindness and love.

B) Theological translate of feet cleaning incident of Jesus.
1. In this world washing feet means clean, but in spiritually it means sanctification.

In today’s verse 8-10 it says ‘ Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”

Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

⁹ Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”

¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”

2.In here we can consider washing the body as regeneration/born again.

Becoming new person from sin and washing hands and feet are for sanctification.

 

1. Although we are saved if we commit small sin we need to repent our sins. 1John 1:9 says ⁹ If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Isaiah 1:18 says ‘¹⁸ “Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the Lord,
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.’  Our sin to go to hell was saved by Jesus Christ, but after little sins we commit must be repent to be saved as well.

4. Few decades ago when we do not owe bath tub in the house we had to go to the public bath every once a week or month. When I was in elementary school I took a bath once or two in a year at home in big plastic container. Other bath was taken in public bath, but although you took bath you must wash face, hands, and feet..

5. In John 10-11 says, ¹⁰ Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” ¹¹ For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

Jesus cleaned Judah’s feet as well, but he was only thinking about how he is going to sell Jesus off. Jesus knew his plan, but wanted to give him a chance to change his mind and repent his sin. At the end Judah made wrong decision and sold Jesus off to soldiers. This means Judah was not saved.

C) Jesus’ last favor
1. In verse 1 , It is about Jesus is having last supper with his 12 disciples.

At the last supper Jesus gave them valuable lessons. In today’s verse 1 it says“1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. And last lesson was in verse 14 ‘¹⁴ If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.’ Christian life is washing each other’s feet, which means serving and doing volunteer work for each other like how Jesus was for us.

2. However, in this life we need to focus on three things which are 1) focus on Jesus, 2) Do not care about other’s perspective. 3) Do not wish reward for volunteer. Because without this it is not volunteering, and no serving, so we need to work for thankfulness and pleasant for Jesus’ salvation.

Person who knows how to serve is a sinful woman from Luke chapter 7. When she was saved she was happy so she broke a jar of oil and poured on Jesus’ feet.

This was record on Matthew chapter 26:10-13 like this.

“¹⁰ But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. ¹¹ For you have the poor with you always, but Me you do not have always. ¹² For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial. ¹³ Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

This woman only had her attention to Jesus. Washing Jesus’ feet she used valuable oil. We might think we can sell the oil and help poors, but woman was only thanking Jesus and did not care other’s perspective.

3. Romanian Christian leader Richard Bombrant wrote a book called ‘Underground Movement of God’. In the book it introduces many Christians who were tortured to death, but did not give up on God against communist. Stephen did not give up on got while he was stoned to death, Peter was hung back award on cross to death, and Saint Paul did not stop spreading gospel of God until he was executed. Martyrdom is truly ultimate way of serving our God.

1. Lovely everyone! We are same Christian who was either positioned by Jesus to work in church or we owe to gospel. We need to be a servant until we die to take after Jesus who showed us a way to serve.

 

2. When we learn and serve like Jesus who loved his disciple to the end, and served us until he was hung on the cross, we will receive compliment from Jesus that we are now clean. Now we need to focus on Jesus and have his lesson to our mind and serve church and spread Gospel throughout our lives. Let us pray.
