The Five Missions of The Church   

¹⁶ Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. ¹⁷ When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.

¹⁸ And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. ¹⁹ Go therefore^[c] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

1. In 1995 administration of Canada and US Navy had interesting communication. It’s about “Newfoundland”

 USN (US navy): To avoid crash turn your direction to 15 degree to north over.

Canada: To avoid crash you change direction to 15degree to south over.

 

USN: I’m the captain of the ship. I repeat change your fairway over.

Canada: Negative you need to change direction please over.

USN: This is USA Lincoln aircraft carrier. We are second ranking of USN ship. We are sailing along with intermediate army squads, cruiser squads, and many frigates. We need to change direction to 15 degree north over.

Canada: This is a lighthouse over.

USN: …

US Navy was arguing with Canada for a while, but at last after they noticed they were trying to fight fairway with lighthouse how embarrassing it would have been? This is true story, but also shows that US does not know how to yield. However the point of story is existence of lighthouse. It is benchmark so it leads and turns ship around. Lighthouse stays at the same place so it can guide ships to right fairway for them. Existence of Church’s Christian can be similar to lighthouse. People nowadays are busy proving their own way, but Christians can be like lighthouse guiding people to the right path.

A) First is mission of Worship

Response to God’s demand is worship.

In Psalms 150: 1-2, 6 says 

Praise the Lord!

Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!

² Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

 ⁶ Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord!

InIn asdasdasd ^{John 4:23-24 says, ‘23} But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. ²⁴ God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Romans12:1-2 says, ‘I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. ² And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

 

1 Samuel 2:30 says, ‘³⁰ Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.’

Christian always need to in God in our lives, focusing in God is worship and that is main purpose of existence of church, and it is pleasing God.

 Therefore, in book of Hebrews 10:25 says, ‘²⁵ not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.’

 In worship we need to express love towards God in varies ways.

And worshiping God has to occur in our daily lives alone. Bible studies are worship, small group and family worship is worship. Like how pontiff sacrificed daily we need to praise, love, and thank God is worshipping life.
  Therefore, if we neglect in worshiping God says he will neglect that kind of person.

 

B) Missionary Work of Mission

 Evangelism is main mission to church, because church without evangelism and God’s word no longer a church.

If teaching is for church to grow, preaching is gather people from outside of church group.

 

In healthy church teaching and preaching are active. God expand the heaven through the church.

Therefore, in Matthew 28: 19-20 says, ‘¹⁹ Go therefore^[c] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.’  

 

The reason why God built church is because there was a purpose to spread gospel to lost souls. Church that does not do missionary work is not a true church and church member who does not spread gospel is not a Christian. Gospel is for lost soul and isolated soul, so it must be spread. How do we spread it? First we need to depend on ability of Holy spirit, second we need to come forth to all kinds of people, third need to make disciples who earned salvation.  

 

C) Mission of Education.

 

Mission of church is in growing and leading people of faith. Therefore Christian’s education is help church member’s faith to grow, help them adapt to church community, develop church’s culture and pass down to new generation, and through God’s word lead people who does not know God and live them in lessons of Jesus

 

Therefore, Sunday school and discipleship has to develop and active, so church can be more active in fulfilling the mission.

D) Mission of Volunteer  

1 Peter 4:10-11 says, ‘¹⁰ As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. ¹¹ If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.’

Jesus cared deeply to poor and socially isolated people. Jesus cured ill and raises the dead he was on lead to do a good conduct as speaks of Samaria (Luke)

   In James 1:27 says, ‘²⁷ Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.’

Act of volunteer and serving are important components that act as light and salt of the church.

 

E) Mission of Fellowship

 

Fellowship (Koinonia) means ‘posses everything as jointly’

Fellowship is church member’s love to each other and has horizontal dimension (like we are equal), and through sharing it has vertical dimension with God (like God is above us).

 

 (1 Corinthians 12:26) ²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

 (Romans 12:15-18) ¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. ¹⁶ Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

¹⁷ Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

We need to learn how to love each other eternally, and externally do act of volunteer through fellowship.

Our church has grace of 31st anniversary of founding. We have worked hard, but there are always room for improvement and part we need to repent. Let’s stay humble and as hard worker, so we can work harder on maintaining church like church. Now let’s take care of the five missions of the church and become a church that pleases God that act has light and salt. Let us pray.
