Hello everyone, who would have thought that this is going to happen. 6 years ago, who would have known that I, who sat at the back of the church, worshiped, would be standing at this pulpit, and preaching the word of God? I served in the military for 14 years as an enlisted soldier, and after being discharged, I became a chaplain candidate and attended a seminary school in LA where my parents live. While attending seminary, I served a Korean church called Doulos Mission Church in Koreatown, LA, and served as a youth pastor. And last year, I graduated from the army chaplain school, and came here to Fort Drum, as an army chaplain.

I never thought I'd be back here again. When I got the phone call that I was going to Fort Drum as a new assignment as a chaplain, it was a very complicated feeling with shock, laughter, and gratitude at the same time. When I found out that I got assigned here to Fort Drum, I immediately called pastor Ahn for the news, and pastor Ahn greeted me warmly, by shouting Hallelujah. Coming back to this place brings back many memories from the past. I have preached many sermons in front of students as a youth pastor, but today is my first time preaching as an ordained pastor in a Sunday service. I believe that God will be greatly glorified when we worship today.

The scripture that we read together today is an event that you all know very well. When Jesus went to a town called Bethsaida, a large crowd followed Him to hear His words, and as time went on, many people became hungry. And this story is about Jesus feeding over 5000 people in miracle. I've heard this story a lot since I was a kid. Whenever I heard this story in Sunday school when I was young, I thought, “Why did it have to be a barley bread? There must have been many different types of bread, like there are pizza breads and chocolate breads.” According to Dr. William Barclay, a famous British Bible scholar, barley bread was the cheapest of all breads and was the most despised bread. Explain that it was the bread eaten by animals, the very poor, and the lowly. Jesus received this poor barley bread and blessed it. And he fed more than 5,000 people and performed a miracle that left 12 baskets full of left over.

When I was young, I wasn't good at studying. Even now, of course, I am not always good at it, and by the grace of God, I graduated from seminary school, and also graduated from the army chaplain school and became a pastor. I loved to play, and I loved to travel and get around. There are 7 cousins of my age, including myself, and I applied for college admissions when I was in the 12th grade, graduating high school. One of the cousins got into UCLA, the other cousins got into UC San Diego, Pepperdine, and my cousins in Korea got into Yonsei University and Chung-Ang University which are the prestige schools in Korea. While my cousins were getting into colleges, I got into the Army.

Even after enlisting in the military, I played really hard and traveled a lot. I enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, bungee jumping, skydiving, as well as various sports, such as tennis, golf, football, soccer, swimming, etc. I even visited over 30 states and enjoyed traveling.

As my cousins graduated from college, they posted their graduation photos on Facebook. As time went on, when my cousins who were way younger than I were also posting pictures of college graduation photos on Facebook, I came to my senses and started studying for college. I decided to follow my father’s footsteps to become an army chaplain, so I went to California to study theology, and started the youth ministry in a Korean church.

When I first started the youth ministry, I wondered what kind of ability I could have to become the spiritual leader of these young children. I didn't have any spiritual knowledge in my head at the moment, so I was seriously thinking about how I could preach in front of these young, bright-eyed souls. My first high school sermon was less than 3 minutes long. When my wife turned on the camera to record my sermon, she said the sermon was already over. I thought to myself, “the students will never come to our church again.”

One day, during a seminary class, the professor told me not to try to reinforce what I am not good at, but to improve what I am already good at. I started to think about what I'm good at. I was not good at preaching, not good at teaching the Word, or I not good at counseling others. What I was good at was going out, making plans for traveling and visiting different restaurants and places. So, I started to take my youth members out to different places to try different things, foods, and watch and experience different things.

But surprisingly, when I started to take my youth members different places, the students began to change. After eating new food and visiting new places, the students started to listen to me and became more active at church events. And through traveling, the students began to understand that the world we live in now is a world created by God. We started to discuss about what would God think of the movie we just watched? The music that we listened to at the concert. The topics of conversation about God's creation and our journey together were endless. It was an opportunity to get to know God better through travels and experiences.

Jesus fed 5000 people with 5 barley loaves and 2 fish. You will be different breads. Some people study a lot and have good spirituality, so some people would be like pizza bread. Some people know the Bible a lot and pray a lot, so they may be sweet bread like chocolate bread. But if we give any bread to God, God feeds the hungry sheep. The bread I hate the most is bread with raisins. I could be a pastor like raisin bread. But when I offered himself up to God, he accepted and fed 20 students through me. And now God is feeding close to 500 soldiers through me.

When I first came to Watertown, I was surprised that there was a Korean church here too. What was even more surprising was that the lunch was the most delicious among all Korean churches I have ever been to. This Korean Baptist Church in the countryside called Watertown is very special to me. I learned guitar here for the first time and sang for the praise team, I did choir here, worked as a Sunday School teacher here, and became a chaplain here. Even though Watertown may seem like a small place like 5 barley loaves and 2 fish, we believe that God loves and blesses this church and feeds many people. Even if it is barley bread or dry fish, if you give it to God, God will use it for his great purpose. I have shared my life now with the Bible. So, what kind of life is the Bible talking about in today's text demanding of us?

The first thing that today's Word requires of us is to give our sincere hearts to God. It doesn't matter what was brought into Jesus, but what matters is that we gave everything we had. The little boy gave everything he had. Barley loaves and fish are not important here. It is important that the child gave everything he had. It doesn't matter if I'm good at singing or not. It is important that I sincerely praised God. It doesn't matter how good or bad I am at preaching; it's about how sincerely I share God's word. It's not about whether I'm good at cooking or not, it's about how sincerely I served for the church. God wants our hearts. It doesn't matter how much or what we give to God, but what matters to us, whether or not we gave to God all that we value. And God works in it. He receives our hearts and works.

The second thing that today's Word requires of us is faith. What are you believing in? We believe in God. There are two types of people? There are people who trust God and there are people who don't trust God. Disciples were also classified into two types. There were those who believed in the workings of Jesus and those who did not. Andrew, who believed that miracles would happen when the five barley loaves and two fish were offered to Jesus, and the Lord regarded that faith as precious. When anything is held in the hands of Jesus, miracles will happen. Even if it is barley bread or not perfect bread, we must check our faith to see whether we are really holding on to the Lord, whether we trust in Him, and whether we are looking forward to His work. We have to check whether we are believers in faith or not, whether we are disciples like Andrew or not.

Third, God's work is rich. In other words, God's drama is dynamic. God always give us more than what we ask for, just like how there were 12 baskets of left over after feeding 5000 people. We believe that justice is to give as much as we receive and to receive as much as we give. However, God sees our devotion and wants to give us 30 times, 60 times, and 100 times blessings. Miracles happen in faith, obedience, and devotion. When you serve God well, you will receive blessings. God is the source of blessing. It comes from above. Although people plan many things, it is God who makes them happen. Wealth and honor belong to God. Dear members of Watertown Baptist Church, Today, we need servants of God who have true courage and are devoted to God and for the church. I pray that the members of Watertown Baptist Church give their heart and everything to God, dedicate themselves with true faith and expect God's work.

여러분, 안녕하세요? 이런 일이 일어날 거라고 생각 못했어요. 6년 전만 해도 교회 뒤편에 앉아 예배하던 제가, 이 강단에 서서 하나님의 말씀을 전하게 될 줄 누가 알았겠습니까?

저는 현역에서 14년 동안 입대했다가 제대 후, 군목 후보가 되어, 부모님이 사시는 LA에 있는 신학교에 다녔습니다. 신학교에 다닐 때 LA 한인타운에 있는 둘로스선교교회를 섬기며 청년목사로 섬겼습니다. 그리고 작년에 저는 육군 군목 학교를 졸업하고 군목으로 Fort Drum에 왔습니다.

제가 다시 여기로 돌아올 것이라고는 생각하지 못했습니다. 신임목사로 Fort Drum에 간다는 전화를 받았을 때, 충격과 웃음, 고마움이 동시에 밀려오는 매우 복잡한 감정이었어요.

여기 포트드럼으로 부임했다는 소식을 듣고 바로 안 목사님께 전화를 드렸더니 안 목사님께서 할렐루야를 외치며 따뜻하게 맞이해 주셨습니다. 이곳에 다시 오니 과거의 많은 추억이 떠오릅니다. 청소년 목사로서 학생들 앞에서 많은 설교를 해왔지만, 안수목사로서 주일예배에서 설교하는 것은 오늘이 처음입니다. 오늘 우리가 예배할 때 하나님께서 크게 영광 받으실 것을 믿습니다.

오늘 우리가 함께 읽는 성구는 여러분 모두가 잘 알고 있는 사건입니다. 예수께서 벳세다라는 동네에 가셨을 때에, 큰 무리가 그의 말씀을 들으려고 따라갔고, 시간이 지나면서 많은 사람이 배가 고팠습니다. 그리고 이 이야기는 예수님께서 5000명이 넘는 사람들을 기적적으로 먹이신 이야기입니다. 나는 어렸을 때부터 이 이야기를 많이 들었죠. 어렸을 때, 주일학교에서 이 이야기를 들을 때마다 “이게 왜 보리빵이어야 하지? 피자빵, 초코빵 등 다양한 빵이 있었을 텐데.”라고 했습니다.

사실 영국의 유명한 성경학자인 Dr. William Barclay에 따르면, 보리 빵은 모든 빵 중에서 가장 저렴 하 고 가장 무시 받는 빵이었답니다. 그것은 동물, 매우 가난하고 천한 사람들이 먹는 빵이었다 고 설명합니다. 예수님은 이 가난한 보리떡을 받으시고 축복하셨습니다. 그리고 오천 명이 넘는 사람 들을 먹이시고 12바구니에 남은 음식을 남기는 기적을 행하셨습니다.

저는 어렸을 때 공부를 잘하지 못했습니다. 물론 지금도 항상 잘하는 것은 아니고, 하나님의 은혜로 신학교도 졸업하고, 육군사관학교도 졸업하고 목회자가 되었습니다. 저는 노는 것을 좋아했고 여행하고 돌아다니는 것도 좋아했습니다. 저를 포함해 사촌이 7명인데, 고등학교 12학년 때 대학에 지원했습니다. 사촌 중 한 명은 UCLA에, 다른 사촌은 UC 샌디에이고, 페퍼다인에, 한국에 있는 사촌들은 한국의 명문 연세대와 중앙대학교에 다녔습니다. 사촌들이 대학에 들어가는 동안 저는 군대에 갔죠.

군 입대 후에도 정말 열심히 놀고 여행도 많이 다녔어요. 캠핑, 사냥, 낚시, 번지점프, 스카이 다이 빙은 물론, 테니스, 골프, 축구, 축구, 수영 등 다양한 스포츠를 즐겼습니다. 30개 이상의 주를 방문 하며 여행도 즐겼습니다.

사촌들이 대학을 졸업하자 졸업 사진을 페이스북에 올렸다. 시간이 지날수록 저보다 훨씬 어린 사촌들도 페이스북에 대학 졸업사진을 올리자….저는, 정신을 차리고 대학 공부를 시작했습니다. 저는 아버지의 뒤를 이어 군목이 되기로 결심하고 캘리포니아로 가서 신학을 공부하고 한국 교회에서 청년 사역을 시작했습니다.

처음 청소년 사역을 시작했을 때 ,저는 어떤 능력이 있어야 이 어린 아이들의 영적 지도자가 될 수 있을까 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 그 당시 제게는 영적인 지식이 없었기 때문에, 이 밝고 눈이 밝은 영혼들 앞에서 어떻게 설교할 수 있을까에 대해 진지하게 고민하고 있었습니다. 나의 첫 고등학교 설교는 3분도 채 되지 않았죠. 제 아내가 제 설교를 녹화하기 위해 카메라를 켰을 때, 그녀는 설교가 이미 끝났다고 말했습니다. “학생들은 다시는 우리 교회에 오지 않을 것”이라고 속으로 생각했다.

어느 날 신학교 수업 시간에 교수님께서 제가 잘 못하는 것을 보강하지 말고 이미 잘하는 것을 향상시키라고 말씀하셨습니다. 내가 잘하는 것이 무엇인지 생각하기 시작했다. 나는 설교를 잘하지 못했으며, 말씀을 잘 가르치지 못했으며, 남에게 조언을 잘하지 못했습니다. 내가 잘하는 것은 외출, 여행 계획 세우기, 다양한 식당과 장소를 방문하는 것이었습니다. 그래서 저는 청소년들 을 데리고 다른 곳으로 데려가서 다양한 음식과 음식을 맛보고 다양한 것을 보고 경험하게 하게 하였습니다.

그런데 놀랍게도… 제가 청소년 회원들을 다른 곳으로 데려가기 시작했을 때, 학생들이 변하기 시작했습니다. 새로운 음식을 먹고, 새로운 곳을 방문하면서, 학생들은 내 말을 듣기 시작했고, 교회 행사에 더 적극적으로 참여했습니다. 그리고 여행을 통해 배운 것은, 여행을 통해 학생들이 지금 우리가 살고 있는 세상이 하나님이 만드신 세상이라는 것을 이해하기 시작했습니다. 우리는 우리가 방금 본 영화에 대해 하나님이 어떻게 생각하실까에 대해 토론하기 시작했습니다. 콘서트에서 들은 음악ㅂ부터 하나님의 창조와 우리의 여정에 대한 대화의 주제는 끝이 없었습니 다. 여행과 체험을 통해 하나님을 더 잘 알 수 있는 기회였습니다.

예수님은 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리로 오천 명을 먹이셨습니다. 당신은 다른 빵이 될 수 있습니다. 어떤 사람은 공부를 많이 하고 영성이 좋아서 피자빵을 좋아할 것입니다. 어떤 사람들은 성경을 많이 알고 기도도 많이 하기 때문에 초콜릿 빵처럼 달콤한 빵일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님께 떡을 드리면 하나님은 굶주린 양을 먹이십니다. 내가 제일 싫어하는 빵은 건포도 가 들어간 빵이죠. 나는 건포도 빵 같은 목사가 될 수 있습니다. 그러나 내가 하나님께 자신을 드렸 을 때, 하나님은 나를 통해 20명의 제자를 받아 주시고 먹이셨습니다. 그리고 지금 하나님은 나를 통해 500명 가까운 군인들을 먹이고 계십니다.

처음 워터타운에 왔을 때 이곳에도 한인교회가 있다는 사실에 놀랐습니다. 더욱 놀라운 것은 내가 가본 한인교회 중, 점심이 가장 맛있었다는 것이죠.

워터타운이라는 시골 한인침례교회는 저에게 아주 특별한 곳입니다. 저는 여기서 기타를 처음 배웠고 찬양팀에서 노래를 불렀고, 여기서 합창을 했고, 주일학교 교사로 일했고, 이곳에서 목사가 되었습니다. 워터타운이 보리 5개와 물고기 2마리처럼 작은 곳처럼 보일지라도 하나님께서 이 교회를 사랑하시고 축복하시고 많은 사람들을 먹여 살리신다는 것을 믿습니다.

보리떡이건 건어물 생선이건 하나님께 드리면 하나님께서 큰 목적을 위해 사용하실 것입니다. 저는 이제 나의 삶을 성경과 나누었습니다. 그렇다면 오늘 본문에서 성경은 우리에게 어떤 삶을 요구하고 있습니까?

오늘 말씀이 우리에게 가장 먼저 요구하는 것은 하나님께 진실한 마음을 드리는 것입니다. 무엇을 예수님께 가져왔는지는 중요하지 않지만, 중요한 것은 우리가 가진 모든 것을 드렸다는 것입니다.

어린 소년은 그가 가진 모든 것을 드렸습니다. 보리 빵과 생선은 여기에서 중요하지 않습니다. 아이가 가진 모든 것을 드렸다는 것이 중요합니다.

내가 노래를 잘하는지 못하는지는 중요하지 않죠. 하나님을 진심으로 찬양하는 것이 중요합니다. 내가 설교를 얼마나 잘하든 못하든 그것은 중요하지 않습니다. 그것은 내가 하나님의 말씀을 얼마나 진심으로 전하느냐 하는 것입니다.

뭔가를 잘하느냐 못하느냐가 아니라 얼마나 성실하게 교회를 섬겼느냐가 중요합니다. 하나님은 우리의 마음을 원하십니다. 우리가 하나님께 얼마를 얼마를 드리는가가 중요하지 않고, 우리가 가치 있는 모든 것을 하나님께 드렸는지 아닌지가 우리에게 중요합니다. 그리고 그 안에서 하나님 이 일하십니다. 그분은 우리의 마음과 헌신을 받으십니다.

오늘 말씀이 우리에게 요구하는 두 번째 것은 믿음입니다. 당신은 무엇을 믿고 있습니까? 우리는 하나님을 믿습니다. 두 종류의 사람이 있다? 하나님을 믿는 사람이 있고 하나님을 믿지 않는 사람이 있습니다.

 제자들도 두 부류로 나뉘었습니다. 예수님의 역사를 믿는 사람과 믿지 않는 사람이 있었습니다. 예수님께서는 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리리였지마, 그래도 그것들을 드리면 기적이 일어난다고 믿었던 안드레의 믿음을 귀하게 여기셨습니다. 무엇이든지 예수님의 손에 붙들면 기적이 일어납니다.

보리떡이건 값비싼 고급 빵이건 간에 드리면 됩니다. 우리가 진정으로 주님을 붙들고 있는지, 그분을 신뢰하고 있는지, 그분의 역사를 고대하고 있는지를 믿음을 점검해야 합니다. 우리는 우리가 안드레 같은 제자는 혹 아닌지, 그런 믿음을 가진 사람들인지 아닌지를 확인해야 합니다.

셋째, 하나님의 일은 풍성합니다. 즉, 하나님의 드라마는 역동적입니다. 5000명을 먹이고도 12바구니를 남겼듯이 하나님은 우리가 구하는 것보다 더 많이 주십니다. 우리는 받은 만큼 주고 주는 만큼 받는 것이 정의라고 믿습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리의 헌신을 보시고 30배, 60배, 100배 축복을 주시기를 원하십니다. 기적은 믿음과 순종과 헌신에서 일어납니다. 하나님을 잘 섬기면 축복을 받습니다. 하나님은 축복의 근원이십니다. 그것은 위에서 오는 것입니다. 사람은 많은 것을 계획하지만 그것을 이루시는 분은 하나님이십니다. 부와 명예는 하나님께 있습니다.

사랑하는 워터타운침례교회 성도 여러분, 오늘날 우리에게는 참된 용기를 갖고 하나님과 교회를 위해 헌신하는 하나님의 종들이 더욱 필요합니다. 워터타운침례교회 성도들이 마음과 모든 것을 하나님께 드리고, 참된 믿음으로 헌신하며, 하나님의 역사를 기대하는 신실하 하나님의 종으로 살아 가시길 예수 이름으로 더욱 기도 드립니다.
