What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?

(Mark 10:46-52)

46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.

48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.

49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

Every people include Christian face hardships in their life. Today’s sermon is about a person who changed his life into blessing and salvation from depressing fate. How is your life? How is your church? Do you feel lost?

An evangelist found a little box among wife’s stuff. He asked his wife about the box but all she saying was “Never open the box.” Like she said he did not open the box and he became a pastor, of course he totally forgot about the box until he found the box again after 20 years later. While he arranges his house he found the box, he thought it would be okay to open the box since 20 years have passed, so he opened it. In the box there were 3 eggs and $2000 dollars. Pastor decided to ask his wife about the box, When he ask about the eggs she said, “I bought an egg whenever I felt your sermon is boring.”  He was pleased because there are only three eggs in the box which probably means he was only boring in 3 Sundays in 20 years. He said “Okay then what about the money?” his wife replied “That’s the money from selling eggs.”

Today’s text describes an event that happens in Jericho. Simply, a blind bagger went to Jesus and asks Him to cure his eye sight then Jesus healed him.
However, why Jesus said
thy faith hath made thee whole” to blind Bartimaeus?

Even though Bartimaeus lost his eye sight in verse 47 we can see he heard that Jesus was coming. When Jesus was near him, among the crowd he started to yell. Even though many charged him he did not stop. What had in his mind is faith that Jesus would hear me if I call him, even though he was a blind man instead of giving up, he tried other methods to reach out.

Brothers and sisters, we often put our self in the miserly and think our self as useless, and hopeless because of one or two our weaknesses, we should have stronger faith than that.

Also he did not care what other people say. Why care what other people say when we receive Gods blessing? We should not care about what other people think when it comes to our faith.

When Jesus calls him, other people change their attitude towards him. They told him

And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.” You see, when people notice that Jesus with you they change their attitude so do not care about what other people say. Just follow Jesus.

He finally meets Jesus however he can only hear Jesus voice. Here in 21 century we can see we are in the same situation with Bartimaeus. He can see Jesus, faith is not coming from seeing. However some people asks Jesus or God to show themselves. With faith we can do what Bartimaeus did, even we cannot see him we can still tell our wishes to Jesus.

So what should we ask? How should we ask? Jesus asks us What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? “ Why do you think Jesus asked this question to him when Jesus already knows what he wants? It was because Jesus wants prayer with specifics.

I heard an anecdote from a pastor. Before he get married, his wife pray specifically for his future husband. What she asked was wise, leadership, diligentetc. There was one thing she did not mention among those feature, it was about her husbands hair. That pastor was a bold guy. (Korean ladies usually do not like bold guys, because they look older than their age.)

My point is that our prayer needs to be very specific.

Today we learn true faith from a blind Guy Bartimeous. What stops you to come to God? If your weakness is the obstacle, use other method that you can use there is always the other ways. There were many people in Castle Jericho with healthy body, however one who got Jesus bless was a blind man. We should not compete like other non Christians. We need to think about what blocks us to come to Jesus or pray. Like Bartimeous, we should thank for and make use of what we have and ask what you need for our church and your life. Prayer is better when it is more specific. I hope and bless in Jesus name to all of us here today to experience Jesus reply for your prayers.
