Jesus’s Four Wishes (John 17:9-13)
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
1. There is a famous painting called “The Helping Hand” by French artist Emile Renouf. In this painting, a grandfather and a granddaughter are in a boat on the vast sea.
The grandfather is the only one who is rowing but granddaughter’s hand is over the grandfather’s hand, meaning the little granddaughter won’t do much physical help but it helps the grandfather mentally. This painting reminds me that Jesus is the one who controlling our life even if we feel like we are in control.
2. Today’s scripture is about Jesus last prayer after He finished all the work that He planned to do in this world.
John 13:1 = Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. However there were four prayers that Jesus left to the world, let us see what they are.
A) Prayer for his disciples.
1. John 17:11 says “ And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.”
Jesus realized He won’t be able to stay with His disciples and ask God for protection for them. This kind of love we experience from our parents.
2. Moses is the one who experienced God’s protection first hand. So he confess in Deuteronomy 32:10 “ 10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.” He praised the Lord who feed them and protect them over the long journey in the wilderness. The author of Psalm praises God like this in Psalm 121:4 says “Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”
B. Prayer for us to unite.
1. John 17:11 says “ And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.”
Jesus wanted His disciples to be united with God just like He is united with God. What is united? It means one body and one soul. Jesus was there where God told Him to be and Jesus did everything God asked for Him. Even if His plan wasn’t pleasurable plan He followed God’s direction. What is the ultimate goal of being a Christian? Be united in God.
2. Paul pointed out the importance of being united with God in his letter for his brothers and sisters in Ephesian church.
Ephesians 4:3= “3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:4 =”4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;”
Start with your group, pray with them, serve with them, save souls with them. Satan hates gathering of Christians. Follow the Holy Sprit’s guidance is the key. Respect each other and humble your selves.
C) Prayer for us to not to lose anything.
1. John 17:12 says “12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.”
Jesus didn’t lose any of his disciples except the Judas. It was necessary for him to full fill God’s plan.
When we pray, we ask God for us to hold everything we achieve whether it is money or health. But the point is we only need God. He has all the blessing and grace so don’t you worry.
Paul says in Romans 8:36~39:
“36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
D) Prayer for us to live in joy.
In verse 13th of today’s scripture says, “13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.”
Jesus knew what will happen to Him. His disciples were in agony of losing their teacher and lord. However in Jesus’ heart, there was a joy. He knew He would save entire world if He sacrifice Himself.
Disciple Paul said to Church of Philippian when they were in pain and hardships by the Roman Empire. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” Do you rejoice your life right now? Or are you in suffering? Rejoice, that is God’s will. Amen?
That is why Jesus says on John 16:33 “33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
We too are in suffering and sorrow that we do not want but believe that God will prevail. Soon there will be no pain and your worries will turn into joy.
After reading today’s scripture, we can see all the prayer He did wasn’t for him it was for everybody else, for his disciples, and for us. This scripture is still effective because our living Jesus is in the Heaven right next to God and look over us.
He still pray to protect us from evil, for us to become one, to keep everything, and for us to rejoice. I hope and pray for you to live in joy and faith, until the end of the time let us praise our Lord and be thankful for all He does for you.
