귀신의 세계관 심어주는 할로윈 경계해야

시작하는 말

10월 31이면 “할로윈 데이”이다. 동네는 할로윈 데이 장식으로 난리 법석이다. 동네가 점점 마치 공동묘지 모습으로 바뀌거나 어린 때 보았던 드라큐라 배경을 보는 것 같다. 마켓에는 할로윈 물건으로 어린 고객과 부모를 자극시키고 있다. 공공기관에도 할로윈을 위한 축제 포스터가 가득하다. 아마 은행이나 우체국 직원은 할로윈 분장하고 일할 것이다. 농촌에는 호박을 추수하고 마켓으로 이동하느라 야단이다. 한국은 그동안 “나와 상관없다” 식으로 무관심했던 이 날이었다. 교회에서도 단순히 “귀신의 날”이야 하면서 단호한 비판뿐  이었다. 그러나 세 명의 손자들을 가진 나로서는 눈을 크게 뜨고 주위를 돌아보게 하였고, 이게 대한 성경적 신학적 비판과 함께 이 날에 대한 교회와 성도로서 그 대안을 살펴보고자 한다.

 

할로윈의 어원과 기원

“할로윈(Halloween)”이라는 말은 “Hallow”라는 Holy(거룩한, 성스러운)라는 말과 “Eve(ning)”, 전야이라는 말는 고대 영어에서 유래 되었다. 즉, 문자적 의미로는 “거룩한 전야”라는 뜻을 가졌다. 그러나 그 시작의 기원을 보면 매우 심각한 역사적 유래를 알 수 있다.

 할로윈의 유래에 대하여는 여러 가지 입장과 학설이 있다.

그러나 대체로 받아드리는 역사적 유래는 다음과 같다. 주전 500년께 태양신을 섬기던 아일랜드 켈트족들의 사탄 숭배 제사행위에서 비롯됐다는 것이 정설이다. 켈트족들은 여름이 끝나는 10월31일은 태양이 지구로부터 가장 멀리 떨어져 있는 날이라고 생각했다. 그래서 이 날은 1년 중 지상에 가장 음기(陰氣)가 많은 날이며 떠돌아다니는 영들이 난동을 부리고 재난을 일으킨다고 보았다.

 

또한 켈트 족의 신년은 11월 1일이고, 그 전날 밤인 10월 31일은 일종의 섣 달 그믐 즉 한 해의 마지막 날이다. 그래서 가을의 수확에 대하여 감사하고 축하하며 풍요로운 새해를 맞이하기 위하여 이 날 밤 모든 악령과 악마를 몰아내고 새해에는 행운과 풍작을 기원하는 의식을 올린 것에서 유래되었다고 본다.

 

참고적으로 켈트 족은 슬라브, 게르만, 라틴족과 같이 유럽의 4대 민족의 한 민족이다. 켈트족은 로마인에게 쫓기어 북유럽으로 쫓기어 올라가다 아일랜드에 정착하게 되었다. 이 켈트족은 주술사 드루이드 문화를 가졌고, 이는 우리가 흔히 잘 알고 있는 해리포터, 반지의 제왕, 아더왕 이야기, 그리고 백설 공주와 같은 이야기들이 바로 이 켈트족의 문화적 영향을 받았다고 볼 수 있다.

 

할로윈에 대한 미국과 한국의 현장

할로윈 문화에 대하여 별 다른 반감을 가지지 않는다고 한다. 보통 미국인들은 자신의 집 앞이나 정원에 여러 가지 할로윈 물건으로 공동묘지, 해골 전시장을 만든다. 심지어 필자의 집 인근 어떤 집에는 프로젝트를 설치하여 각종 해골과 귀신들을 보여 주고 있다. 할로윈 데이를 대비하여 동네 사람들은 많은 사탕과 과자들을 준비하고 있다. 그들에게는 이것이 단지 즐겁고 재미있는 문화요 행사라고 생각하고 있다. 이것이 ''사탄 숭배''와 관련 있는 축제라고 생각하지 는 않는다. 한국은 어떤가? 어떤 가사에 따라면 한국은 이미 오래 전부터 온갖 종류의 유령과 악귀들이 등장하는 이교적 축제 「할로윈」을 무분별하게 받아 드리고 있다고 한다.

 

필자가 본 원고를 쓰고 있는 날은 2019년 10월 21일이다. 오늘 이곳에 평소에 알고 지내는 판사 부인이며 간호원 직을 가졌던 70세 초반 어떤 분과 대화 중에 “어제 밤, 달라스 지역에 예고없이 토네이도가 왔은데, 할로윈이 가까이 왔기 때문에 그런 현상이 나타난다”고 말해, 필자는 너무 놀라웠다. 그 이유는 그분은 대단한 지성인이고 신앙을 가진 사람인데 그런 이야기를 할 정도로 인식이 되어 있다. 켈트 족에 풍습에 따라는 이처럼 사람에게 재앙을 내리는 귀신들을 잘 모셔야 다음 1년을 무사히 지낼 수 있다고 믿었다.

 

할로윈을 준비하는 동네 모습과 마켓 현장

기독교 세계관으로 동네와 마켓을 둘려 보았을 때, 어안이 벙벙하고 할 말을 잃게 된다. 동네가 점점, 한집 두집 공동묘지 혹은 해골 집합소로 바뀌는 것 같다. 마켓에는 할로윈 특별 코너, 특별 세일을 벌리고 있다. 할로윈 물건 코너를 지나면 귀신들의 옷, 해골 뼈다귀, 악마 모형과 자식으로 섬짓할 정도이다. 특별히 아동의 도서판매 코너에는 매우 다양한 종류의 할로윈 책으로 가득 메워져 있다. 백지와 같은 아이들의 마음에 할로윈이 그 무엇보다 강하게 그려지 고 새겨질 것을 생각하니 손자 손녀들이 세계관 형성에 걱정이 앞서게 되었다. 10월31일이 되면 아이들은 각종 귀신 복장을 하고 학교에 등교하고 이 날에는 학생들의 자유분방한 의상을 입고 행동을 하는 것을 허락할 정도이다.

 

“귀신 흉내, 사탄 흉내 내기”를 단순히 놀이로 이해해야 하나?

할로윈의 목적은 상업적 목적이 다분하다. 그 문화의 배후에는 그날을 기점으로 사업자 혹은 장사꾼들이 여러 가지 물건, 의상, 사탕, 과자 등을 팔아 수입을 올리는데 혈안이 되어 있다. 통계를 알 수 없지만 할로윈 물건도 대단한 매상이 예상된다. 그러나 더 중요한 사실은 할로 윈의 정점은 바로 귀신 의상을 입고, 귀신 놀이를 하는 것이다. 마귀상, 귀신상, 도깨비 상, 해골상 등 의상으로 변장해서 가가호호 방문하면서 “Trick or treats” 놀이를 한다. 트릭 올 트릿(Trick or Treat!)은 이렇게 시작됐다.

 

켈트족들은 죽은 조상 영혼들이 저승으로 가지 못하고 방황하며 가을 수확물에 대해 장난(trick)을 일삼으며 저주를 가져다준다고 믿었다. 이들을 저승으로 평안히 보내기 위해서는 술, 음식, 수확한 곡식 등으로 달래주는 일(treat)이 필요한데 이런 의식을 일 년에 한번 행하는 미신적 마술적 행위이다.

 

영적, 심리적, 교육적 심각한 문제 야기

여기서 죽음의 영혼들의 모습으로 분장하고 귀신 놀이, 사탄 놀이하는 것은 영적으로 매우 심각한 문제이다. 아이들이게 사탕을 안주면 이 집을 그냥 두지 않겠다는, 보복성, 폭력적 심리를 자극할 수 있어, 재미, 흥미의 놀이가 아니라 아이들에게 욕심을 불러일으키고, 협박에 대한 보상 심리의 쾌감을 얻게 하는 것도 교육적으로 바르지 않다고 본다.

 

할로윈에 대한 성경적 비판과 제언

첫째, 할로윈은 유일신 하나님만을 숭배하는 성경적 진리와 어굿난다. 십계명에 하나님 외 다른 신을 섬기지도 말고, 어떤 형상과 우상을 만들지 말라고 했다. 하나님 절대 신앙을 가진 성도로서 할로윈을 지내는 것을 문화적 행사나 놀이가 아니라, 그 속에 담긴 영성은 바로 귀신 을 섬기고 숭상하는 것임을 알아야 할 것이다,

 

둘째, 할로윈 이교문화에 대하여 수용하고 관용적 입장을 취하는 것은 일종의 종교다원주의를 추구하는 것이다. 이교문화와 기독교 진리와 문화는 마치 석가모니 출생을 기념하기 위해 목사나 신부가 가서 합장하고 축하하는 행위와 같다.

 

셋째, 이스라엘 민족이 패망한 역사적 현장을 볼 때, 그들은 아침에는 하나님을 찾고 저녁에는 바알과 아세라를 찾는 혼합주의 신앙행태에서 진노하시는 하나님의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 우리는 문화라는 탈, 어린아이들의 놀이라는 포용성 때문에 절대 양보할 수 없는 하나님 절대 신앙에 흠결이 생겨서는 안 된다.

 

넷째, 어떤 한인 교회나 미국 교회에서는 10월 31일 「할로윈」(Halloween)을 이날을 「홀리윈」(Holyween), 「추수제」(Harvest Festival), 「할렐루야 나이트」(Hallelujah Night)라는 새로운 이름을 붙여 가족중심의 행사로 방향 전환을 시도하고 있다. 그것도 신앙적 반사 효과를 알 수 있다. 그러나 어떤 면에서 할로윈 날에 교회에서 그런 행사를 시도하는 자체가 그날을 인정하는 의미도 있다. 그래서 보수적인 그리스도인들은 아예 그날을 무시해 버리는 경우가 많다.

 

다섯째, 이스라엘 부모들이 자녀들에게 쉐마 교육을 하였듯이, 이날에 가정에서 혹은 교회에서 특별히 휠로윈의 허구성과 거짓 우상에 대한 성경적 진리를 가르치는 시간이 되어야 하겠다. 필자는 한국에서 교회를 섬길 때, 석가 출생 날을 기념하기 위하여 연등 행사로 온 나라와 불교 국가에서 대단한 행사를 치룰 때, 오히려 불교신앙에 대한 개괄적 이해와 기독신앙과의 이질성과 차별성, 기독교의 유일한 구원관, 하나님의 절대 신앙을 가르칠 좋은 기회로 삼곤 하였다. 이처럼 타종교의 문화적 행사가 이루어질 때, 타종교에 대하여 혐오적 태도는 가져서 는 안되지만, 순교적 각오로 기독교 절대 진리를 사수하는 신앙교육의 기회를 삼아야 하겠다.

 

할로윈을 비판하는 교육적 성경구절

 

1. 할로윈은 일종의 우상 숭배이다.

    성경에 우상 숭배에 대한 단어가 180번 나온다. 그 중에 대표적인 5개 구절을 소개하면 다음과 같다.

   1) 출 20:4, 개정 너를 위하여 새긴 우상을 만들지 말고 또 위로 하늘에 있는 것이나 아래로 땅에 있는 것이나 땅 아래 물 속에 있는 것의 어떤 형상도 만들지 말며

 2) 대하 24:18, 개정 그의 조상들의 하나님 여호와의 전을 버리고 아세라 목상과 우상을 섬겼으므로 그 죄로 말미암아 진노가 유다와 예루살렘에 임하니라사

3) 사 41:29, 개정 보라 그들은 다 헛되며 그들의 행사는 허무하며 그들이 부어 만든 우상들은 바람이요 공허한 것뿐이니라

4) 겔 14:4, 개정 그런즉 너는 그들에게 말하여 이르라 나 주 여호와가 말하노라 이스라엘 족속 중에 그 우상을 마음에 들이며 죄악의 걸림돌을 자기 앞에 두고 선지자에게로 가는 모든 자에게 나 여호와가 그 우상의 수효대로 보응하리니

5) 요일 5:21, 개정; 자녀들아 너희 자신을 지켜 우상에게서 멀리하라 …등 입니다.

 

   2. 할로윈은 다른 신을 인정하고 혹은 섬기는 행위이다.

 

     성경에 다른 신을 섬기지 말라는 구절이 77번 나온다. 그 대표적인 4개 성경구절은 다음과 같다.

     1) 출 23:13, 개정 내가 네게 이른 모든 일을 삼가 지키고 다른 신들의 이름은 부르지도 말며 네 입에서 들리게도 하지 말지니라

2) 신 4:39, 개정 그런즉 너는 오늘 위로 하늘에나 아래로 땅에 오직 여호와는 하나님이시요 다른 신이 없는 줄을 알아 명심하고

 3) 신 11:28, 개정 너희가 만일 내가 오늘 너희에게 명령하는 도에서 돌이켜 떠나 너희의 하나님 여호와의 명령을 듣지 아니하고 본래 알지 못하던 다른 신들을 따르면 저주를 받으리라

4) 호 13:4, 개정 그러나 애굽 땅에 있을 때부터 나는 네 하나님 여호와라 나 밖에 네가 다른 신을 알지 말 것이라 나 외에는 구원자가 없느니라…등등입니다.

 

     3. 할로윈은 결국 귀신을 좋게 하고 섬기는 일이다.

성경에 귀신과 관련된 성경구절이 103개 나온다. 그 대표적인 7개 성경구절은 다음과 같다. 1) 신 32:17, 개정; 그들은 하나님께 제사하지 아니하고 귀신들에게 하였으니 곧 그들이 알지 못하던 신들, 근래에 들어온 새로운 신들 너희의 조상들이 두려워하지 아니하던 것들이로다 2) 슥 13:2, 개정; 만군의 여호와가 말하노라 그 날에 내가 우상의 이름을 이 땅에서 끊어서 기억도 되지 못하게 할 것이며 거짓 선지자와 더러운 귀신을 이 땅에서 떠나게 할 것이라

3) 6) 고전 10:21, 개정; 너희가 주의 잔과 귀신의 잔을 겸하여 마시지 못하고 주의 식탁과 귀신의 식탁에 겸하여 참여하지 못하리라

4) 계 16:14, 개정 그들은 귀신의 영이라 이적을 행하여 온 천하 왕들에게 가서 하나님 곧 전능하신 이의 큰 날에 있을 전쟁을 위하여 그들을 모으더라…등입니다.

결론

 할로윈은 이교적 문화이다. 귀신, 사탄, 우상 숭배의 문화이다. 상업주의, 세속화의 영향이다. 흥미를 유발하는 놀이 행사, 문화 행사가 아니다. 순전한 아이들과 청소년들이 귀신, 사탄, 해골 흉내를 내는 것은 심각한 영적인 문제요, 교육적 문제이다. 이러한 날을 기점으로 가정적 으로 교회적으로 대안적 문화 계발과 행사도 중요하지만, 하나님에 대한 절대 신앙을 교육할 수 있는 기회로 삼아야 한다. 단순히 아이들이 원한다고 그들이 원하는 것을 허락하다 보면 순수한 말씀신앙, 하나님 중심 신앙을 놓치게 된다. 이스라엘의 쉐마 교육이 그처럼 철저했음 에도 불구하고 패망한 이스라엘 역사를 거울로 삼아야 하겠다.

Be wary of Halloween, a world view of ghosts

October 31st is “Halloween Day”. The neighborhood is buzzing with Halloween decorations. It's like the neighborhood gradually turns into a cemetery, or you see the Dracula background you saw as a child. The market is stimulating young customers and parents with Halloween items. Public institutions are also full of festival posters for Halloween. Perhaps a bank or post office worker will dress up for Halloween. In rural areas, it is hard to harvest pumpkins and move them to the market. It was this day that Korea had been indifferent to, saying, “It has nothing to do with me.” Even in the church, it was simply a “day of ghosts,” and it was only a hard criticism. However, as me, who has three grandchildren, I opened my eyes wide and looked around, and I would like to examine the alternatives as a church and a saint on this day along with a biblical and theological critique of this.

 

The etymology and origin of Halloween

The word “Halloween” is derived from the Old English word “Hallow” (Means Holy), the word “ween” is  “Evening”. In other words, it literally means “holy eve”. However, the origin of its beginnings reveals a very serious historical origin.

 There are various positions and theories about the origin of Halloween.

However, the generally accepted historical origins are as follows. It is orthodox that it originated from the rituals of Satan worship by the Irish Celts who worshiped the sun god around 500 B.C. The Celts believed that October 31, the end of summer, was the day the sun was farthest from the Earth. Therefore, it was believed that this day was the most yin-qi on the earth of the year, and the wandering spirits were rioting and causing disasters.

 

Also, the Celtic New Year is on November 1st, and the night before October 31st is a kind of New Year's Eve, the last day of the year. Therefore, it is believed that it was derived from the ritual to drive out all evil spirits and demons and pray for good luck and a good harvest in the new year in order to thank and celebrate the autumn harvest and welcome a prosperous New Year.

 

For reference, the Celts are one of the four major ethnic groups in Europe, like the Slavs, Germanic, and Latins. The Celts were chased by the Romans and driven up to Northern Europe, where they settled in Ireland. These Celts had a shaman druid culture, and it can be said that stories such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, King Arthur, and Snow White that we are familiar with were influenced by this Celt culture.

It is said that he has no particular antipathy towards Halloween culture. Usually, Americans build a cemetery or a skeleton display in front of their house or in their garden with various Halloween items. I even installed a project in a house near my house to show various skeletons and ghosts. In preparation for Halloween, the locals are preparing a lot of candy and sweets. For them, they think it's just a fun, fun cultural event. I do not think this is a festival related to ''Satan worship''. How about Korea? According to some lyrics, Korea has long been indiscriminately accepting the pagan festival "Halloween" in which all kinds of ghosts and demons appear.

 

The date I am writing this manuscript is October 21, 2019. Today, during a conversation with a judge's wife and a nurse I know here in her early 70s, she said, "Last night, there was a tornado in the Dallas area without notice, and that's happening because Halloween is near." It was so surprising. The reason is that he is a great intellectual and a man of faith, and he is recognized enough to say such a story. According to the custom of the Celts, they believed that they would be able to live the next year safely if they were well cared for by these demons that bring disaster to humans.

 

A look at the neighborhood preparing for Halloween and the market scene

When I look around the town and the market with a Christian worldview, I am stunned and at a loss for words. It seems that the neighborhood is gradually turning into a cemetery or a skeleton gathering place. The market is holding a special Halloween corner and special sale. Passing through the Halloween stuff section, you can pretend to be ghosts' clothes, skeleton bones, demon models and children. In particular, the children's book sale section is filled with a wide variety of Halloween books. Thinking that Halloween will be drawn and engraved in the minds of children like a blank sheet of paper more strongly than anything else, worries about the formation of the worldview of grandchildren and granddaughters take precedence. On October 31st, children go to school wearing various ghost costumes, and on this day, students are allowed to act in free-spirited costumes.

 

Should “imitation of a ghost, imitation of Satan” be understood simply as a game?

Halloween has many commercial purposes. Behind the culture, from that day on, businessmen or merchants are concentrating on earning income by selling various items, clothes, candy, and sweets. Although the statistics are unknown, Halloween items are expected to have great sales as well. But more importantly, the pinnacle of Halloween is wearing ghost costumes and playing ghost games. Disguise yourself in costumes such as devil statues, ghost statues, goblin statues, and skeletons, and play “Trick or treats” as you visit from house to house. This is how Trick or Treat! started.

The Celts believed that the spirits of their dead ancestors wandered without going to the underworld, played tricks about the autumn harvest, and brought curses. In order to send them safely to the underworld, it is necessary to treat them with alcohol, food, and harvested grain. This ritual is a superstitious and magical act performed once a year.

Here, disguising as the spirits of death and playing with demons and Satan is a very serious spiritual problem. It can stimulate the psychology of retaliation and violence, saying that if the children do not give candy, they will not leave this house. i don't think it's correct

 

Biblical Criticism and Suggestions on Halloween

 

First, Halloween is at odds with the biblical truth of worshiping only one God. He said in the Ten Commandments that we should not worship any gods other than God, and that we should not make any images or idols. As a saint with absolute faith in God, celebrating Halloween is not a cultural event or a game, but the spirituality contained in it is to worship and worship demons.

 

Second, accepting and tolerant of Halloween pagan culture is pursuing a kind of religious pluralism. Pagan culture and Christian truth and culture are like an act of joining and celebrating the birth of Shakyamuni by a pastor or priest.

 

Third, when looking at the historical site of the Israelites' defeat, they can see God's wrath in the syncretistic religious practice of seeking God in the morning and Baal and Asherah in the evening. We must not create a flaw in our absolute faith in God, which cannot be compromised because of the disguise of culture and the inclusiveness of children's play.

 

Fourth, in some Korean churches and American churches, “Halloween” on October 31 is designated as “Holyween”, “Harvest Festival”, and “Hallelujah Night” with new names. It is trying to change the direction to a family-oriented event. You can also see the religious reflex effect. But in a way, trying to do such an event at a church on Halloween is also an acknowledgment of that day. That is why conservative Christians often ignore the day altogether.

 

Fifth, just as Israeli parents educated their children about Shema, this day should be a time to teach the biblical truth about the fiction and false idols of Wheelowin especially at home or at church. When I serve the church in Korea, when I hold great events all over the country and in Buddhist countries as a lantern event to commemorate the birth day of Buddha, I rather have a general understanding of the Buddhist faith, heterogeneity and differentiation from Christianity, and the uniqueness of Christianity. I used to use it as a good opportunity to teach the view of salvation and the absolute faith of God. When cultural events of other religions are held like this, we should not have a hateful attitude toward other religions, but we should use it as an opportunity for religious education to defend the absolute truth of Christianity with the determination to be martyred.

 

*Educational Bible Verses Criticizing Halloween

 

1. Halloween is a kind of idolatry.

    The word idolatry occurs 180 times in the Bible. Among them, five representative passages are introduced:

   1) Exodus 20:4, Rev. 20:4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth below, or that is in the water under the earth.

 2) 2 Chronicles 24:18 Revised: Because they forsook the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served Asherah poles and idols, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of their sin.

3) Isaiah 41:29, Revised Behold, they are all vain, their deeds are futile; their molten idols are wind and empty things.

4) Ezekiel 14:4 Revised Ezekiel 14:4 Therefore, speak to them and say, This is what the Sovereign LORD says: To all the people of the house of Israel who take their idols to heart, and who put a stumbling block in their iniquity before them and go to the prophets, I, the LORD, am the Lord of their idols. I will repay you in number

5) 1 John 5:21, revised; Children, keep yourselves away from idols... etc.

 

   2. Halloween is the act of acknowledging or serving other gods.

 

     There are 77 verses in the Bible telling us not to worship other gods. The four typical Bible verses are:

     1) Exodus 23:13, Revised Version: Beware of all that I have told you, and you shall not call on the names of other gods, nor let them come out of your mouth.

2) Deuteronomy 4:39, Rev. Therefore, today you are in heaven above and on earth below, but the LORD

3) Deuteronomy 11:28, Revised Version: Cursed are you if you turn from the way I am commanding you today and do not obey the command of the LORD your God, but follow other gods of which you have not known.

4) Hos 13:4, Rev. But since I was in the land of Egypt I am the LORD your God; you shall know no other gods except me, and there is no savior besides me... and so on.

 

     3. Halloween is all about doing good and serving ghosts.

There are 103 Bible verses related to demons in the Bible. The seven representative Bible verses are as follows. 1) Deut. 32:17, revised; They did not sacrifice to God, but to demons, gods they did not know, new gods that have come in recent years, which your ancestors did not fear. 2) Zechariah 13:2, Rev; In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, I will cut off the names of idols from the land, and they will no longer be remembered, and I will bring false prophets and unclean spirits from the land.

3) 6) 1 Corinthians 10:21, revised; You will not drink from the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons, neither will you partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

 Halloween is a pagan culture. It is a culture of demons, Satan, and idolatry. commercialism and secularization. It is not an interesting play event or cultural event. It is a serious spiritual and educational problem for innocent children and adolescents to imitate demons, Satan, and skeletons. Starting from these days, it is important to develop alternative cultures and events at home and in the church, but it should be used as an opportunity to educate the absolute faith in God. If we simply allow children to do what they want, they will miss out on pure faith in the Word and God-centered faith. Even though Israel's Shema education was so thorough, we must use the ruined history of Israel as a mirror.
